Police consider gun law changes

Police are considering whether it is time to reconsider the age someone can get a firearms licence.

Under current laws, a person aged 16 can apply to own a gun, and anyone who can satisfy the police they are a fit and proper person to be in possession of a firearm can obtain a licence for a sporting-type rifle or shotgun.

National manager for response and operations Superintendent Chris Scahill said raising the age limit was something the police should probably look at.

"Obviously a very significant responsibility to own or even be in possession of a fireman. Do we need to have another look at the age? I think there might be something in that."

He said the police were reviewing firearms licensing, and age was just one part of it.
