International researchers have successfully isolated DNA from eggshells of extinct birds, including that of the moa.
They say this ability opens up exciting research possibilities for palaentologists and archaeologists.
One of the researchers, New Zealand scientist Mike Bunce, says DNA from eggshells has a high level of purity.
He says the work could help with finding out a lot more about moa.
Mr Bunce says male moa used to brood eggs, making them easy targets for Maori hunters.
