The Chiefs rugby franchise says former All Black and current Chiefs player Sione Lauaki has been charged with assault.
The 28-year-old player was interviewed by police after an incident at a Hamilton central city bar in the early hours of Friday morning.
The Chiefs say police charged him on Wednesday. They say there will be no further comment until the matter has been through the courts.
They say Lauaki will also take part in a New Zealand Rugby Union and Chiefs disciplinary process.
