Salvage crew hopes to board Northland fishing boat

A salvage crew is hoping to get on board a Northland fishing boat on Tuesday evening after it foundered off Ninety-Mile Beach.

The 22-metre, wooden-hulled Kumea has been pounded by heavy surf all day after running aground at Waipapakauri.

The boat's crew abandoned ship on Monday and were winched to safety by helicopter after the boat began taking in water.

Northland Regional Council says insurance assessors have been waiting for low tide to go on board and inspect the vessel.
