NZ Herald
The New Zealand Herald said on Tuesday former broadcaster, game-show host and television anchorman Tony Veitch appeared in court yesterday charged simply as being unemployed, of Herne Bay. The paper says Mr Veitch was greeted with abuse and taunts from others in the holding cells of Auckland District court. The Herald also says expatriate billionaire Owen Glenn will be asked to give evidence to parliament's privileges committee about his 100 thousand dollar donation towards the legal bill of New Zealand First leader Winston Peters.
Dominion Post
The paper leads with the Winston Peters hearing, saying Mr Peters' long-time lawyer, Brian Henry, repeatedly refused to name the middleman who put him in touch with Owen Glenn. He also said the client involved had refused to waive privilege. The Dominion Post also features the New Zealand men's cycling pursuit team who won bronze - and beat Australia - in Beijing last night. The paper reports Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement has married his long term girlfriend Miranda Manasiadis in Los Angeles.
The Press
The paper says the South Island is on the verge of a spring electricity shortage as southern hydro storage plummets. The Press says North Island power is critical to avoid rationing or power cuts and South Islanders face an anxious wait until the arrival of the spring thaw and seasonal rains in about six weeks. The Press also covers the Tony Veitch court hearing yesterday, with the former presenter saying he was more determined than ever to fight to clear his name.
Otago Daily Times
The paper says elective surgery and outpatient clinics at Dunedin Hospital have been postponed for the second consecutive day as it battles to contain an outbreak of the highly contagious norovirus. The Winston Peters hearing is also on the Otago Daily Times front page. The ODT also features New Zealand's bronze medal winning cycling team on the front page.
