No relocation for Aotea Square market traders

Stallholders at Auckland's Aotea Square market say they are disappointed no alternative location has been found for them.

About 80 stalls will close later this year for the redevelopment of the city centre square and underground car park, and the council says the revamped square will not be appropriate for a market.

Market traders say they assumed the success of the twice-weekly market meant they would be found a new home in the city centre until 2010 and then be allowed to return.

But The Edge, which runs the market, says it could find nothing suitable, and the council says it is not its place to relocate a privately run enterprise.

It has, however, suggested that traders move to markets at the AUT quadrant, Karangahape Road or Victoria Park.

Stallholders say they feel sidelined and that the importance of the market to the city and tourism has not been recognised.
