Weatherston portrait disqualified

A painting of convicted murderer Clayton Weatherston has been disqualified and withdrawn from an art competition.

The disqualification from the Adam Portraiture Award comes after it was revealed the artist, Liam Gerrard, did not get Weatherston's permission to paint his image.

New Zealand Portrait Gallery spokesperson Elizabeth Alley says trustees had accepted the piece in good faith and the artist had signed the entry form confirming permission to paint the portrait had been obtained.

Ms Alley says she expects the portrait to be removed from the exhibition in Wellington in the next few days.

The former Otago University tutor was jailed for at least 18 years last September, for stabbing his ex girlfriend Sophie Elliott more than 200 times.
