Search for Mt Cook climbers called off

11:57 am on 7 March 2010

A search for two tourists who activated an emergency locator beacon on Friday on Aoraki Mount Cook is now officially over.

Department of Conservation personnel have spoken to the men via radio from a DoC hut.

They set off the beacon when they suspected one of them had hypothermia.

The climbers had some warm food and bivouacked for the night, and carried on with their climb the next day.

Rescue teams were alerted at about 3.15pm on Friday, but poor visibility prevented a helicopter reaching the area until Saturday morning.

The men gave a thumbs up to the pilot, to indicate they were okay.

The Rescue Co-ordination Centre is praising the pair for taking emergency communications equipment with them.
