Coconut milk warning after reactions

6:52 pm on 23 September 2015

There is a health warning for people who buy some brands of coconut milk, with the products being linked to severe allergic reactions.

Food safety officials have issued an alert, saying the packaging label does not say there is milk or milk products in the drinks.

The Ministry of Primary Industries said people with a milk allergy or intolerance should not buy four imported brands.

They are:

  • Greentime brand Coconut Milk Drink, 500ml can, manufactured in Taiwan.
  • Coco Joy brand Pure Coconut Milk, (banana, chocolate, coffee flavours) 500ml bottle, manufactured in Vietnam.
  • V Fresh brand Coconut Milk Drink, 240ml can, manufactured in Thailand.
  • Orthodox Coconut Palm brand, Coconut Palm Coconut Juice, 245ml can, 245ml Tetra-pak, 1000ml Tetra-pak, manufactured in China.

Officials said they had recalled the products but it was possible some were still on shop shelves.

They were stocked in various retailers such as dairies, ethnic food stores and specialist sports stores.

The two cases of allergic reactions have been recorded by Australian authorities, who have also recalled the products.
