Hastings District Council has added a bicycle to its fleet of vehicles, in an effort to save fuel and reduce its carbon footprint.
Waste Minimisation Officer Dominic Salmon says staff can use the bike to attend meetings in various parts of the city.
He says they will arrive at their destination more alert, and also won't have the stress of finding a parking space.
Mr Salmon says accessories include two different-sized helmets, high visibility gear, a lock, and panniers to carry a laptop and paper work.
He says Christchurch City Council is also using pedal power to cut costs and it has three bikes.
