Tauranga City Council has approved a $20 million design that it hopes will encourage more people to the waterfront.
The council says the concept is both simpler and $10 million cheaper than an earlier one, and allows for more open spaces and boardwalks. It will also encourage more people to get to the water from the Strand area.
The design involves the removal of all car parking from the Tauranga waterfront over the next 10 years. By that time, the council says, other parking facilities will be available in the central business district.
The concept has been developed by Wraight & Associates, which designed the Wellington waterfront.
