No more waterfront buildings wanted by lobby group

A residents group has asked Wellington City Council not to plan more buildings on the waterfront.

Strategy and Policy Committee members heard oral submissions on Thursday morning on a waterfront development plan, on which they will vote later this month.

Waterfront Watch spokesperson Christine Greenwood, told the committee her lobby group opposes more buildings on the waterfront.

She said buildings "privatise public spaces" and leave areas in shade for much of the day.

However, Councillor Andy Foster said having buildings on the waterfront is essential for funding the waterfront's public spaces and without that money, the burden would fall on ratepayers.
