Officers failing police fitness test

9:14 pm on 1 March 2010

New Zealand police say their officers are some of the fittest in the world.

But new figures reveal that out of 8467 officers eligible to sit the two-yearly physical competency test, 1353 have not passed.

The worst offenders were officers based in Wellington, Northland and Waitemata.

Police human resource general manager Wayne Annan says the pass rate is no cause for concern and most of the officers who are not currently certified are exempt from sitting the test.

An officer who passes the test receives three days of leave and an extra $1400 a year. More than $21 million has been spent on paying out the incentive since 2005.
