Chinese worker exploitation claims to be heard by ERA

The Rail and Maritime Union's claims that Chinese workers are being exploited by KiwiRail will be heard this week by the Employment Relations Authority.

Workers from China's state-owned rail operator have been in New Zealand removing asbestos from locomotives that KiwiRail ordered.

Tehnically KiwiRail is not the employer; howver, the Rail and Maritime Union argues KiwiRail has an obligation to ensure the Chinese workers are not being exploited.

KiwiRail said the Chinese workers were not displacing New Zealand jobs and it was confident that, should New Zealand law apply to the Chinese workers, their remuneration would comply.
