Former National Party politician George Gair has died at the age of 88.
Mr Gair was a cabinet minister in the governments led by Robert Muldoon from 1975-1984, holding at different times the portfolios of transport, energy, heath and social welfare.
He was National's deputy leader, from 1986-1987.
Mr Gair represented North Shore from 1966-1990 and, after retiring from Parliament, served as North Shore's mayor for one term.
Prime Minister John Key said Mr Gair was well-known for his competence and good manners, and was highly regarded by his colleagues.
