Hundreds march in Dunedin stadium protest

Hundreds of people marched through Dunedin on Saturday afternoon, in protest at the amount of public funding earmarked for a new stadium in the city.

Opponents of the $188 million roofed stadium think it should be privately funded.

About 600 people carrying signs bearing the name of the opposition group, Stop The Stadium, marched to the accompaniment of bagpipes and drums.

The group's president Bev Butler told the crowd gathered in the Octagon that it is the wrong time to build a stadium, given current economic conditions.

"Make no mistake, this proposed stadium has the potential to sink this city financially. Let's sink the stadium bfore the stadium sinks the city," she told the marchers.
