Former Feltex factory closes

1:03 pm on 1 August 2008

Friday is the last day of work at Godfrey Hirst's Feltex carpet mill in Foxton before the plant closes.

Some 80 employees have been made redundant.

The National Distribution Union says it's been trying to ensure they are retrained and offered help with job-search skills.

The union says only four of the 80 people made redundant at Feilding five months ago, needed to go onto a benefit.

However, union president Robert Reid says things will be much more difficult for Foxton workers because they live further away from a main centre.

Godfrey Hirst bought Feltex after it went into receivership in 2006. It announced in March that the factories in Feilding and Foxton would close, with the loss of 165 jobs.

The union accuses private equity companies and banks of destroying Feltex.
