A Rimutaka Prison inmate attacked by another prisoner remains in a critical condition in Wellington Hospital.
He is in the intensive care unit, where police say he is fighting for his life.
Detective Sergeant Tony Heathcote said on Wednesday that an argument during a game of pool led to the assault with a pool cue on Sunday afternoon in a faith based unit.
Police are talking to guards who were present at the time.
