Relatives hurl abuse at murder accused

4:06 pm on 24 February 2010

Relatives of a Christchurch woman shouted abuse during the appearance in court of the man charged with her murder.

Gaynor White, 62, died in her home in the Port Hills suburb of Huntsbury between Thursday morning and Friday afternoon during what police believe was a burglary.

Shaun Skilling, 22, ignored the family members who were shouting at him and holding pictures of Mrs White, as he stood in the dock at Christchurch District Court on Tuesday.

Victim support staff and police stood between the family and the accused, and one man had to physically restrain Mrs White's son who shouted: "Look at me, you don't deserve to be on this earth."

Other relatives shouted, "I hope you die in prison" as Mr Skilling left the courtroom.

He was remanded in custody to reappear in court on 8 March.

On Monday, the accused appeared in court charged with burglary of Mrs White's home and unlawfully taking her car.
