A young dolphin stranded on a beach on Auckland's North Shore by heavy seas was successfully refloated on Saturday.
The Department of Conservation says the male common dolphin was found washed up at Castor Bay at about 6pm on Saturday, during the storm that hit the North Island.
Initial attempts to encourage the dolphin back out to sea were unsuccessful, so it was transported to Bayswater about 9pm.
Department spokesperson Brett Butland says the dolphin was stabilised in calmer water there, before being successfully released.
