Camping ground death suspicious, say police

4:31 pm on 22 July 2008

The death of a man in a burning car at a camping ground just off State Highway 1 near Hunterville on Friday evening is suspicious, say police.

Passing motorists saw the station wagon on fire at 7.30pm at the Vinegar Hill Reserve in Rangitikei. They pulled the man from the locked car, but were too late to resuscitate him.

Detective Sergeant Kevin Anstis says police and ESR scientists spent three days at the site and the death is suspicious, but will not elaborate.

The dead man, 62, is from the Ohakune area. Family members have been notified, but police have not publicly named him

They want to hear about sightings of a black 1992 Mitsubishi Libero around Hunterville, but also possibly as far away as the South Island, in the 10 days up to Friday.
