Police believe a dead baby found in Christchurch passed away between three months and two years ago.
Police located the mother of the baby on Thursday and are speaking to her about the circumstances of the child being abandoned.
The body of the baby was discovered at a property in Hornbrook Street in the suburb of Sydenham on Wednesday. The 14-bedroom boarding house is home to long-term tenants and international students.
Police say the baby passed away between three months and two years ago.
Detective Inspector Tom Fitzgerald says the body was found in a shed, but may not have been there throughout.
Mr Fitzgerald says it is too early to say whether the baby was stillborn or injured and the case is being treated as a suspicious death.
Officers spent Wednesday photographing the contents of a ute, which was then taken away by a salvage truck.
Police would like to speak to everyone who has lived at the boarding house in the past six months.
A post-mortem on the baby will be held on Thursday.
