Police watchdog wants to be informed about taser use

The head of the Independent Police Conduct Authority wants police to advise it whenever tasers are used.

Justice Lowell Goddard appeared before Parliament's law and order select committee on Wednesday to discuss the agency's past financial year.

Justice Goddard told MPs the authority has taken a keen interest in the use of tasers and said they were used by police in 124 incidents last year and fired nine times.

She wants a memorandum of understanding that police inform the agency when tasers are fired, so their use can be monitored.

Meanwhile, the authority has reduced a backlog of complaints from 1611 in 2007 to 30 last financial year.

The IPCA receives about 2000 complaints every year.
