Crash closes centre lanes on Auckland Harbour Bridge

10:04 am on 19 July 2008

A crash involving two cars and a truck has closed the centre lanes of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in both directions.

Police say a car travelling toward the city lost control on the uphill slope of the bridge and crossed all lanes, striking the centre barrier.

A southbound truck then jack-knifed in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid the vehicle, blocking the centre lanes.

Another car then ran into the truck.

The bridge's clip-on lanes are still open, but the closures are causing significant delays, with south bound traffic reported to be banked up back to Esmond Road.

Police expect the accident to be cleared by 11am.
