A new bird species discovered in New Zealand in 1997 has been given a scientific name.

The Campbell Island snipe has been named Coenocorypha aucklandica perserverance.

The third part of the name is derived from Captain Frederick Hasselburgh's brig, Perserverance, when Campbell island was discovered 200 years ago.

The bird was named by the Department of Conservation which says the naming is as significant as the discovery.

Colin Miskelly says it is the first new bird discovery since the Westland petrel more than 50 years ago.

Dr Miskelly says the Campbell Island snipe is similar to and from the same family as the godwit.
