The Government is set to make major changes to the governance structure at the national development agency for the arts, Creative New Zealand.
The Government plans to merge the Crown entity's arts council and its Maori, Pacific, Arts boards into one board.
Under the proposal, the number of directors at Creative New Zealand will be cut from 28 to 13, and more than $200,000 will be saved.
The Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage says a streamlining of Creative New Zealand, which has an annual budget of $42 million, is long overdue.
The chair of Creative New Zealand's arts council, Alastair Carruthers, says moving to one board will make them more effective.
Mr Carruthers says the board will include a mandatory number of people with knowledge of Maori and Pacific arts.
The Government hopes legislation will be introduced this year to enact the changes.
