Rocks over Shotover River no risk, says council

The Otago Regional Council says there is no risk to public safety from several large pieces of rock hanging over the Shotover River in Queenstown.

The council says tourism operators should help foot the bill for dealing with the 100,000-cubic-metre slip.

Council spokesperson Gavin Palmer says that is because the main river users are commercial jet boat operators.

Totally Tourism chief executive Mark Quickfall says tourism operators and the council will meet on Friday to discuss how the slip should be dealt with and who should pay for the work.
