Government considers voucher system for students

The Government is looking at introducing a variation of the ACT Party's school voucher system for New Zealand's highest and lowest performing students.

The report of an inter-party working group, comprising members from National, ACT and the Maori parties recommends targetting students who are in the lowest 20% of their class or those in the top 5%.

At present, the Government allocates money to schools for each primary school child, and a slightly higher amount for every secondary school student.

But ACT MP and chairperson of the working group, Heather Roy, says that gives parents and students very little say in how that money is spent.

Education Minister Anne Tolley says she is considering the report's recommendations.
