Suppression lifted for man linked to Pickering death

The man police are interviewing in relation to the death of Christchurch mother Vanessa Pickering has lost an appeal for name suppression.

Police named Malcolm Chaston during their search for Ms Pickering last week, saying he was with her and her daughter the last time she was seen.

Ms Pickering's body was found in the Port Hills near Christchurch on Thursday, while her distraught daughter was discovered in a field by a passer-by last Tuesday.

Mr Chaston's various names and photograph were widely publicised, prompting his lawyers to seek name suppression on the basis that his right to a fair trial was at risk.

Judge Michael Crosbie refused to give Mr Chaston name suppression when he appeared in Christchurch District Court last Thursday.

The lawyer representing him said an appeal against that decision would be lodged, forcing Judge Crosbie to grant interim name suppression until the appeal was heard.

However, Justice Chisholm dismissed the appeal in the Christchurch High Court on Monday, ruling that the interests of open justice did not compromise Mr Chaston's right to a fair trial.

Mr Chaston is in custody at this stage charged with sexual violation, unlawful detention and assault on a child. He will reappear in court on 23 February.
