A 25-year-old man appeared in Manukau District Court on Saturday charged with murdering a woman whose body was discovered in Otahuhu early on Friday.
In the course of a brief appearance he was granted interim name suppression so he could tell his ill grandmother.
The accused, who was arrested on Friday night, showed no reaction during the hearing.
Police hope to release the name of the 55-year-old victim once a formal identification has taken place.
Two members of the public found her lying face down near a toilet block in Murphy's Reserve, Otahuhu, at 6.50am on Friday. The police say she had suffered a head injury but a murder weapon is still being sought.
Detective Inspector John Timms says a homicide investigation has been launched and they would like to hear from anyone who walked through the reserve between midnight and 7am on Friday.
Mr Timms says that while the reserve is not known as a trouble spot, they'll be looking at any reports of activities in the area over the past few months.
