Christchurch moves towards ban on car cruising

7:19 pm on 11 February 2010

Christchurch city councillors have voted to consult with the public on a bylaw to ban cruising by so-called boy racers.

Mayor Bob Parker says the bylaw will help curb anti-social activity by motorists.

The bylaw defines cruising as driving repeatedly in the same direction on the same stretch of road in a manner drawing attention to the sound of the engine or in a convoy.

People caught cruising on multi-lane roads would face a fine up to $1000 or a $150 infringement fee.

Mr Parker says the bylaw could be in place by June this year, making Christchurch the first council in New Zealand to ban cruising.

Some councillors say the bylaw may not be effective and may trap innocent drivers, but Mr Parker says it will help curb anti-social behaviour by motorists.

Public consultation on the proposal begins next week.
