Two youth members of St John Ambulance who were in a high speed car race that ended in a fiery crash, will not be dismissed from the ambulance service.

Matthew Crowe and Aiden Hammersely raced along Macleans Island Road in Christchurch in March.

Last month they pleaded guilty to taking part in an illegal street race. They were each disqualified from driving for six months, ordered to complete 60 hours community work and pay $600 reparation.

An internal investigation by St John has now concluded they should not be dismissed.

Regional chief executive, Tony Blaber says they will be asked to use their experience to teach others about the consequences of dangerous driving.
