Warning against money mule scam

1:45 pm on 30 April 2015

Police are warning people not to fall for a tax rebate scam that uses unsuspecting people as money mules to forward stolen money overseas.

The scam involves a person receiving a call saying they have a tax rebate waiting for them but they will get it only if they donate money to a charity in India.

When they agree to donate, money is put in their bank account and they are then told to withdraw the money and forward it to the charity in India.

The police said there was no situation when someone was expected to donate to charity to get a tax rebate.

They said anyone who had fallen for the scam should contact them.
