Thirteen new cycling trails are to go through feasibility studies for inclusion in the next stage of the New Zealand Cycle Trail project.

The trails were selected from 54 applications for funding in December.

Tourism Minister John Key says the chosen trails promise spectacular beauty across both islands.

If all the trails proceed to construction, he says, they will, along with previously-announced ones, provide a network of about 2000km.

The 13 projects are in Tauranga, Opotiki/Gisborne, Rotorua, Taupo, Ruapehu, Hawkes Bay, Nelson/Tasman, Westport, Greymouth, Mt Cook, Queenstown, Clutha and Central Otago.
