Plans to tackle violence in Manurewa

5:51 pm on 12 July 2008

Community leaders in Manurewa have decided to lend more support to Maori wardens, and start after-school programmes, a bid to tackle violence and social problems in the South Auckland suburb.

The meeting on Friday, of more than 100 community and government representatives, also plans to start a similar warden group involving Pacific Islanders.

The meeting followed the killing last month of Navtej Singh, Yin Ping Yang and Joanne Wang in Manurewa.

The meeting decided to investigate the possibility of a local drop in centre, and a junior neighbourhood support group involving children aged seven to nine is being established.

An after-school programme offering swimming lessons, sports and activities to children is to be trialled.

Two more youth workers are being brought in to Manurewa, and 16 extra police officers will be in the suburb, following the killing of three people last month.

A trust is also to be set up which will fund a "community safety hub" to cover the marginilised factions of the community.
