Health officials still investigating measles scare

Health officials say they are continuing to trace people who may have come into contact with a man who visited several Auckland stores while he had measles.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service said the man, in his 30s, was infectious when he visited K-Mart and The Warehouse in Manukau and Countdown at Airport Oaks before going to Middlemore Hospital on 9 April.

The service said it had not yet identified any further possible cases of the disease.

However Medical Officer of Health Julia Peters said if anyone had caught measles from the man they would start to develop systems this weekend or early next week.

She said early measles symptoms are similar to those of the common cold and anyone who thinks they may be infected should seek urgent medical treatment.

Dr Peters said the case was particularly concerning, given that the man had not travelled overseas recently and must have contracted the disease in Auckland.
