Wellington midwife review begins next week

12:05 pm on 10 July 2008

An independent review of Wellington's midwifery service will begin next week.

The Ministry of Health has commissioned the review following the deaths of babies delivered by midwives in the region.

A four-member team will examine the relationship between the Capital and Coast District Health Board and its maternity providers.

It will seek to clarify the roles and responsibilities of midwives working on DHB premises, and will examine the number of reportable incidents related to births managed by midwives.

System quality expert Barbara Crawford will head the team, which also includes an obstetrican and a gynaecologist, as well as a midwife and a consumer representative.

The review's final report is due before the Director General of Health by 8 September.
