A man charged with the murder of a 47-year-old woman following an incident in Taupo has now been named.

Martin Cranswick Schofield appeared at the Rotorua District Court today and has been remanded in custody.

He was initially given name suppression, which was lifted this afternoon.

A police spokesperson said a 49-year-old man went to the Taupo Police Station about 5.45pm yesterday to report an incident at an Elizabeth Street house.

Police went to the scene and found the body of the woman.

The house was examined by Institute of Environmental and Scientific Research staff this morning.

Police said they were yet to formally identify the woman and a post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow.

No further details would be released until family members had been told, the spokesperson said.

Mr Schofield was charged with murder. He entered no plea and was remanded in custody to reappear on 13 May.
