Online counselling service proves popular

3:43 pm on 13 February 2015

Demand for a pilot programme for online counselling aimed at helping young people has doubled since its launch last October.

0800 What's Up was just a phone counselling service before the online chat sessions were introduced.

It said its counsellors had since been involved in more than 1400 sessions, covering issues such as family violence and mental health.

0800 What's Up spokesperson Mike Munnelly said they underestimated the seriousness of issues people would chat about online, such as domestic abuse and depression.

He said they needed more funding but were planning on the online chatroom becoming permanent.
