New effluent technology to be trialled at meatworks

New technology developed at Victoria University that could help the dairy industry deal with its effluent issues is ready to be tested in the field.

The Wetex technology works by breaking down organic sludge in a pressure system and turning it into usable by-products such as water, steam, fertiliser and acetic acid.

John Errington of Viclink says it has the potential to protect rivers and waterways by cleaning up the effluent from dairy farms and other sites such as meatworks.

He says it's a way of taking organic waste and rendering it harmless without producing other waste.

Viclink is planning a trial of the technology with the Taylor Preston meat company in Wellington.
