New tourism initiative not expected to help Maori operators

Maori tourism operators are not expecting benefits from a new initiative to attract Australian visitors.

The Government is sharing $10 million across eight regional tourism organisations to promote themselves across the Tasman.

Maori Tourism Council chairman John Barrett says most Maori ventures cater to North American, European and Asian visitors.

He says the central North Island region including Rotorua and Taupo and perhaps the Auckland and Far North regions may get some benefit from the promotion.

But Mr Barrett told Waatea News that traditionally the Australian market has not been enthusiastic about cultural products so there is unlikely to be any major benefits for the majority of Maori operators.

Mr Barrett said he would like the Government to set aside funds to promote Maori tourism products.
