Avatar is about to sink Titanic as the third highest-grossing film shown in New Zealand.

The $US300 million movie, which was mostly made in Wellington, has now taken almost $12 million in ticket sales at New Zealand cinemas since its release on 17 December.

It last week won two Golden Globe awards as well as receiving eight BAFTA nominations.

Mark Croft is the managing director for the film's distributor, 20th Century Fox and he says Sunday's receipts will see the $12 million barrier broken.

Mr Croft says 70% of the revenue is coming from the country's 20 three-D screens.

Evening showings of the 3D version are almost fully booked in central Wellington for at least a week.

The first movie in The Lord of The Rings trilogy remains the biggest box office hit in New Zealand, generating $14.5 million.
