A former mortgage broker who falsified documents to enable her clients to obtain more than $15 million in home finance has avoided a jail sentence.

Krishna Veni, 44, was sentenced in Wellington District Court on Thursday to 12 months' home detention and 100 hours' community work.

The falsified documents included forms showing loan applicants had sufficient deposits to satisy loan requirements and false financial statements for self-employed clients.

Veni's lawyer said her crimes were not for her own benefit.
