Access to birth records reviewed

11:26 am on 21 January 2015

The Government is reviewing access to Births, Deaths and Marriages records and asking the public to make submissions.

The existing rules came into force in January 2009 with the requirement they be reviewed after five years.

Internal Affairs Minister Peter Dunne said the Government wanted to test whether the current rules on how people access the government held records were adequate and effective.

"The Department of Internal Affairs is reviewing the rules and wants to hear what users of the service think of their usefulness and whether they are still applicable."

He said the review will not look at information sharing or data matching between government agencies.

The final date for lodging submissions for the review is February the 25th.
