A blogger facing five charges for breaching name suppression orders has formed a group to lobby for urgent changes to the law.
Cameron Slater appeared in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday on charges relating to postings on his blog in November and December. It is the first prosecution of its kind in New Zealand.
Mr Slater was remanded without a plea. Outside court, he said his group, called Shame, will pressure Justice Minister Simon Powers to change the laws this year.
He says the law should do more to protect the victims of crime and make it harder for offenders, especially celebrities, to get name suppression.
He says part of the reason for forming the group and setting up a website is to raise the money needed - $10,000 to $15,000 - to fight the charges.
