New year's pain for smokers

10:41 am on 2 January 2015

The price of cigarettes has increased again, with a 10 percent tax increase yesterday pushing the cost of a packet of cigarettes over $20.

Health researchers, including Tobacco Control Research Turanga co-director Marewa Glover, hope the increase will encourage more smokers to kick the habit.

Ms Glover said price rises were an effective way of getting smokers to quit.

"It is unfortunate for smokers but the price of cigarettes ... is one of the best strategies for triggering them to quit and reminding them about their health," she said.
