Missing tourist may be heading south

Police say a French tourist believed to be missing in the Arthur's Pass area is out of the bush, and may be heading south.

A search was launched for the woman, known only as Celine, who was two days overdue from tramping the Cass Saddle.

Police said they had spoken to a Canadian tourist, Genevieve Forcier, who met Celine on the tramp.

They said the pair left the track together and there were reports that Celine may have hitched a ride from Cora Lynn Station back to Arthur's Pass last Wednesday.

Police said they had also received some calls suggesting Celine may have been heading south, but they had not been verified.

They are urging her or anyone who knows where she is to contact them.
