The Royal Society says any new code of ethics would not be created to gag scientists.
Even though it was only reviewed two years ago, the Government asked the leading science group to look again at its code of ethics.
That had prompted some to question if it was a way to silence the Government's critics.
Royal Society President Sir David Skegg said he, and a number of scientists, did not think a change was necessary.
But he said they could reassess it, because they had been asked to by the Government, which suggested a so-called "code of public engagement".
"I don't believe we do need a new code , just that the Government asked us to look at our code and we have to do it.
"We are not really talking about a code which would in anyway restrict scientists, it will give people guidance."
