Surge in Wellington hospital patients

11:22 am on 20 November 2014

Wellington Hospital is struggling to cope with an unexpected surge in patients, and wants people with minor injuries and mild sickness to instead go to their GP.

Capital & Coast District Health Board could not explain the high numbers but has rostered on extra staff to help.

It says people can expect longer waiting times in the emergency department, and suggests people go to their GP if possible.

Kenepuru Hospital is also nearing full capacity.
