Son aims to emulate father and row the Tasman

An Auckland man is aiming to become the first person to row solo across the Tasman in more than 30 years.

If successful, Shaun Quincey, 24, will be the first person ever to row across the Tasman from west to east. His father, Colin Quincey, did the trip in 1977 but in the opposite direction, from New Zealand to Australia.

With his father's help, Mr Quincey is making final preparations before his departure from Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, in his seven-metre rowboat Tasman Trespasser 2.

The 2200km voyage is expected to take up to 70 days.

Mr Quincey says he's been working on the project for the past 14 months and has put together an advisory board of experts in fields such as weather, navigation and survival techniques.
